Prerequisites

To ensure error-free operation of SEP sesam and improve performance, make sure that the following conditions are met:

  • Check the support matrix for the list of supported <xyz> versions.
  • Download SEP sesam version x.x.x or higher. It is highly recommended to use the latest SEP sesam version. Extract the files to a directory of your choice. Double-click setup.exe and follow the instructions. Verify that your system meets the requirements. For details, see SEP_Sesam_Quick_Install_Guide.
  • Verify that your network is set up correctly and that DNS name resolution is successful. Note that forward and reverse DNS resolution is required by SEP sesam. For details, see How to check DNS configuration.
  • It is recommended that 10 gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) is available for larger backups.
  • Once your SEP sesam is installed, import your SEP sesam license. For details, see licensing.
  • Configure SEP sesam and ensure that a data store has sufficient space. For general details, see SEP sesam data store. For more details on configuration, see SEP sesam first steps.

Pre-configuration step: Activating sth./Doing sth.

<Extension> configuration involves several steps, including ...

Refer to your <extension> documentation for configuration instructions! For details, see [www.extension-documentation].

Configuring <application_name> as a SEP sesam Client

If you want to protect your <application_name>, you must configure it as a SEP sesam client. Depending upon your SEP sesam version, the procedure for configuring <application_name> may be slightly different. Refer to the relevant version-specific steps below.

  1. From Main Selection -> Components -> Topology, select the location of your choice, e.g., Storage systems, and click the New client button. The New client window opens.
  2. Enter the client Name. From the Platform drop-down list, select ... From the Operating system drop-down list, select your system, for example ... Then select ... as the Access mode for the SEP sesam server-client communication.

  3. Click the tab .... Enter the ... username and password.

  4. Click OK to add your <application_name> host as a new client.

Creating a backup task

Configuring a(n) <application_name> backup on a SEP sesam Server involves creating a <application_name> backup task, setting up a backup schedule (specifying when you want to back up your data) and linking the schedule to a backup event (specifying how to back up the data and where to back it up to).

For general information on backup configuration and prerequisites, see Standard Backup Procedure. This section deals only with <application_name>-specific information.

  1. From Main Selection -> Tasks -> By clients, select <application_name> client and click New backup task. The New backup task window opens.
  2. Enter the Task name. Give your task a meaningful or descriptive name (max. 15 letters) that clearly identifies it.
  3. From the Backup type drop-down list, select <application_name>.
  4. Select the Source. Click the Browse button (big arrow) and select ...

  5. Optionally, specify the directories/files which you do not want to back up in the Exclude list.
If you want to add a comment, enter it in the Comment field.
  6. If you want to define other options (such as pre/post backup and restore commands, set encryption or compress data (do not use this option if you want to restore a single file!), consolidate individual tasks under a specific task group, assign a task to the schedule), click the corresponding tabs in the New backup task window.
Click OK to create the task.
  7. If you want to start the newly created task immediately, right-click the name of the task and click Immediate start. If you want to create a periodic backup, you have to create a schedule for your backup task: Click New schedule under Main Selection -> Scheduling -> Schedules and set up a schedule. For more details, see Creating a schedule.

  8. Tip: You can also add your backup task to an existing schedule by double-clicking the backup task, selecting the tab Schedules and adding it to one or more schedules. Additionally, you can group your backup tasks to task groups. For details, see Adding a Task to the Task Group.

    Information sign.png Note

Plan your backup schedules carefully. It is recommended to balance your backup schedules to even out the resource usage: for example, schedule a greater number of full backups to run consequently rather than concurrently.

  9. Once you have configured a schedule, you must create a new backup event for it. For general information on creating a backup event, see Creating a backup event.

  10. Information sign.png Note

To protect <application_name> and enable a smooth restore, it is recommended to use a seven-day rotation with differential and incremental backups, where a full backup is run over the weekend every 7th day. This helps you ensure safety of backup data and avoid long chains of incremental/differential backups.

Finally, run the <application_name> backup. You can use the Immediate start button to start your <application_name> backup instantly.

You can view the status of your backup jobs by selecting Last backup state in the Main selection window. The backup status overview provides detailed information on the last run of backup jobs, including the task name, start and stop time of the last backup, backup type, data size, throughput, assigned media pool, etc.
