Overview

To successfully restore an NDMP backup, make sure that all prerequisites are met and preparation steps are performed. See also NDMP Backup.

How you perform the NDMP restore depends on how you created the backup. For example, if you have created a dump backup , you will perform a normal restore. If you have created a smtape backup, you must define additional arguments for smtape restore in the final step of the restore wizard.

SEP sesam version 4.4.3 only supports a complete restore of the NAS appliance volume and does not provide selective restore, while version 4.4.3 Tigon supports selective restore.

Restoring NAS volume data is simple and straightforward. The basic restore steps are described below.

Prerequisites

  • Make sure that you have required permissions and access rights for NDMP restore.
  • Make sure that there is sufficient free space on the target storage system to which you are restoring your data.

Additional prerequisites for smtape restore

  • Ensure that there is about 100 MB more space on the destination storage system than the amount of data to be restored.
  • The volume to which you are going to restore data must be of type DP (data protection) and must be put in a restricted state prior to executing the restore. See NetApp documentation for more information.
  • smtape restore completely overwrites the destination volume therefore make sure that there is no critical data stored on the target volume.

NDMP complete restore

For details on how to configure a restore task and a description of different restore options, see Standard Restore Procedure. Only NDMP-specific steps and options are described in this section.

Because SEP sesam does not support single file restore for NDMP, the Complete restore of selected task option is enabled by default when an NDMP backup task is selected. NDMP backups can be restored to a different location (see step 3). For smtape restore, additional step (step 4) is required to specify the smtape restore type.

  1. From the SEP sesam GUI menu bar, select Activities -> Restore and select the save set you want to restore (type NDMP).
  2. In the Select task step of the wizard, the Complete restore of selected task option is enabled by default when the NDMP backup task is selected. Click Next.

  4. In the Save and start step of the wizard, you can choose to restore the NDMP backup data to a different location. Under Target path, you can choose between the Restore to original target path or New restore target options. If you are performing a normal restore (not smtape) and you choose a new restore target, you can restore your data to a volume or subdirectory by entering the target path as follows: /<volume_name>/<target_dir>.
  5. However, if you are performing a smtape restore, the restore destination must be the root of a volume, e.g., /vol/vol1.
  6. This step is required only for smtape restore: Click the button Expert options and enter the following in the Restore options field:
  7. -a ndmp_tape_format=smtape
  8. If you want to start the NDMP restore immediately, click Start. If you want to save the NDMP restore task, click Save.
Information sign.png Note
After performing a smtape restore, the restored volume is in the read-only state. To make the destination volume writable, use the snapmirror break command. See NetApp documentation for more information.

NDMP selective restore from dump backups

NDMP selective restore is supported from v. 4.4.3 Tigon.

  1. From the SEP sesam GUI menu bar, select Activities -> Restore and select the save set you want to restore (type NDMP).
  2. In the Select task step of the wizard, select the desired version from the list of save sets matching your query. Click Next.
  3. In the Select files dialog, select the files you want to restore and click Next.

  5. In the Save and start step of the wizard, you can choose to restore the NDMP backup data to a different location. Under Target path, you can choose between the Restore to original target path or New restore target options.
Then review your configured restore task and set additional options, if necessary. You can specify additional restore settings by clicking the Expert options button, where you can modify the log level settings, define the pre/post script for restore, etc.
  6. If you want to start the NDMP selective restore immediately, click Start. If you want to save the NDMP restore task, click Save.

A restore task can be scheduled like any other task. If you want to add the NDMP restore task to the schedule, see Scheduling Restore.

You can view the status of the NDMP restore by selecting Job State -> Restore in the Main selection window. It displays detailed information on the restore operations, including task name, start and stop time of the restore, restore type, data size, throughput, status message, etc.
