Overview

The SEP sesam restore is a process that browses for different versions of save sets and copies data from save sets to a client. SEP sesam provides three types of restore, namely, complete restore, generation restore and selective restore.

The restore procedure is configured using a restore task, in which save sets are selected according to date/time and taskname/filename, and the restore type and restore target (for example, a file system folder) are determined. Restore tasks can be saved, scheduled and run automatically in continuous intervals to check and control data integrity. For details, see SEPuler.

To restore server data from save sets following data loss due to a disaster, see SEP sesam Server Disaster Recovery.

Restore types

SEP sesam provides three basic restore types: complete, generation and selective.

Complete restore
a process by which an entire save set is restored - all the files of a save set are selected and restored.
Selective restore
only a subset of a save set's files is selected - only selected parts of data on the save set, such as individual files and directories, are restored.
Generation restore
all generations of backed-up files, including differential or incremental backup files, can be browsed for and selected for restore. SEP sesam automatically switches to the generation view in which all the generations of the files are presented. The selection list displays all files since the last full backup.

Restore procedure

The Standard Restore Procedure is a process that browses for different versions of save sets and copies data from save sets to a client, thus recreating the original data. Restore tasks can be saved, scheduled and run automatically in continuous intervals to check and control data integrity. For details, see SEPuler.

SEP sesam enables you to perform a single file restore as well as cross-platform restore by simply selecting the Mount save set option in the restore wizard. When this option is enabled, the target save set is mounted to the SEP sesam home directory and is instantly accessible for browsing and searching before the actual restore is triggered. For details, see Cross-Platform Recovery File System Layer.

For details on supported extensions, their features and backup procedures, see SEP sesam Documentation and the SEP sesam OS and Database Support Matrix.

Scheduled restore

A restore task can be started immediately from the wizard or saved and scheduled like any other task. For example, a selective restore can be scheduled to run at the completion of the daily backup routine, e.g., the last backed-up file can be restored to a new directory to check and control the data integrity. For details on creating a restore task, see Standard Restore Procedure.

An event or task must be created in order to perform a scheduled restore. It is also possible to schedule a restore for data that has not yet been backed up. A selective restore can be scheduled to run at the completion of the daily backup routine, e.g., the last backed-up file can be restored (preferably) to a new directory and the integrity of the data can be established.

To add a restore task to the schedule, see Scheduling Restore.

Extension and module support

SEP sesam extensions represent additional modules and functionality that provide consistent backup and restore of databases (Oracle, MS SQL, IBM DB2, Informix SAP R/3, etc.), applications (like SAP), groupware systems (MS Exchange, Lotus Domino, etc.) and virtualisation environments (VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, Citrix Xen Server, RHEV). Note that the restore procedure differs for each extension.

For details on specific extension restore, check the extensions list and select the target extension documentation.
