Docs latest icon.png Welcome to the latest SEP sesam documentation version 4.4.3 Beefalo. For previous documentation version(s), check VMware archive.

Overview

SEP sesam 4.4.3 Beefalo introduces support for the VMware sandbox restore (SBR). SEP sesam sandbox for VMware is an isolated environment where you can recover and start one or several virtual machines (VMs). It is useful for verifying the VM backups, performing a training, troubleshooting issues, etc.

There are two different ways to restore a backed up VM to a sandbox:

Prerequisites

  • Ensure that you have sufficient restore permissions and access rights.
  • Ensure that there is enough free space on the target system to which you are restoring your data.
  • Make sure that you use a different network for the sandbox restore to avoid IP address conflicts, as the original VM is usually still active.

Restoring by using restore wizard

You can use the restore wizard to restore VMs to the SEP sesam sandbox. Restore is triggered from the Menu bar -> Activities -> Restore. Restore wizard guides you through the process of restoring your data. For general step-by-step procedure, see Standard Restore Procedure.

Steps

  1. From the SEP sesam GUI menu bar, select Activities -> Restore. The New restore task window opens.
  2. Select what you want to restore. You can search savesets by task name or by filename or path.
  3. Under the Saved in period drop-down lists, specify the time frame for which you want to conduct the search. Click Next.
  4. The search results are displayed. From the list of savesets matching your query, click the version you want to restore. Click Next.
  5. From the Target Settings window, specify the new VM name (if necessary), the target VMware data store, where the VM will run once sandbox restore is finished, then specify the network, folder and resource pool/vApp.
  6. File:VMware sandbox restore Beefalo.jpg
  7. Afterwards, click the button Instant Recovery/Restore VM Options and check the relevant option. You can also set the recovery options manually.
  8. File:VMware restore VM options Beefalo.jpg
  9. Review your restore task configuration in the final Summary step of the wizard. If you want to start your VMware sandbox restore (or instant recovery) immediately, click Start. If you want to save the restore task, click Save. You can also save your restore task as a template.
Information sign.png Note
A restore task can be scheduled like any other task. If you want to add a restore task to the schedule, see Scheduling Restore.

You can view the status of your restore jobs by selecting Job state -> Restore from the Main selection. Restore overview provides detailed information on the last run of restore jobs, including the task name, status (successful, error, in queue, etc.), start and stop time of the last backup, data size, throughput, client, media pool and message.

Restoring by using Restore Assistant

You can also perform an online VMware sandbox restore by using the Restore Assistant, if you have an appropriate permissions. For details, see Restore Assistant.

You can access the Restore Assistant from the SEP sesam GUI (Activities -> Restore Assistant) or by typing the following information in the browser address bar:

http://[sesamserver]:11401/sep/ui/restore/

Information sign.png Note
If you cannot access the online Restore Assistant, check if you have been granted appropriate permissions to perform an online restore. For details, see About Authentication and Authorization.

  1. Open the Restore Assistant in the browser.
  2. From the Start window, check Sandbox restore check box under VMware vSphere virtual machines, and click Next.
  3. Restore assistant start Beefalo.jpg

  7. Restore assistant backup Beefalo.jpg

  9. Restore assistant target Beefalo.jpg
  10. From the Options window, select relevant restore target options from the drop-down lists, such as Data mover, ESX server, Data store, Network interface(s), Folder and Resource pool/vApp. Click Next.
  11. Restore assistant options Beefalo.jpg
  12. In the final step of the Restore Assistant, review your restore task configuration, and click Start restore, if you want to start your sandbox restore immediately.
