SEP sesam creates different protocols or log files for each backup day. Now you can check different system logs in the SEP sesam Web UI, i.e., ''state log'', ''day log'', ''error log'', ''interface logs'' (''alarm'', ''disaster'', ''notify''), and ''message'' log. It is recommended to use the SEP sesam log files to detect operations that caused errors or malfunctions, for example, in case of a failed backup.

Docs latest icon.png Welcome to the latest SEP sesam documentation version 4.4.3 Beefalo V2. For previous documentation version(s), check Documentation archive.

Overview

As of 4.4.3 Beefalo V2, SEP sesam web Dashboard has been completely redesigned to provide a more detailed overview and improved monitoring of the SEP sesam environment.

New SEP sesam web UI is a modern web client with several components, including the web dashboard and the restore assistant. It enables you to handily check status (for data store, client, next events, etc.), monitor SEP sesam operations (backups, restores, etc.), access check logs and reports, and perform online restores by using the restore assistant. The web UI supports recent versions of the major web browsers: Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari.

Web UI (dashboard) access

You can access the web UI by typing the following information in the browser address bar:
http://[servername]:11401/sep/ui
or
https://[servername]:11401/sep/ui.

Example: On the SEP sesam Server the following 'localhost' link will open the web UI: http://localhost:11401/sep/ui

Information sign.png Note
If you cannot access the dashboard, check the authentication settings. For details, see About Authentication and Authorization.

The dashboard (web UI) is also available in the GUI from menu bar -> Activities -> Dashboard, from Main Selection -> Monitoring -> Dashboard, or by clicking the dashboard icon in the toolbar.

SEP Tip.png Tip
When running the SEP sesam GUI as an administrator, the new SEP sesam web UI landing page opens by default (with access to the web UI, links to documentation, etc). You can prevent it from automatically opening when you start the web UI: in the SEP sesam GUI -> menu bar -> Configuration -> Defaults -> General tab, deselect the checkbox Show SEP sesam web client landing page on startup.

Navigating web UI

The new SEP sesam web UI menu allows you to navigate directly to a specific view: Status, Dashboard, Monitoring, System logs, Reports, and Restore Assistant. You can easily check the latest Release notes and get information on SEP CAPS solution. You can collapse or expand the navigation menu by clicking two arrows at the top.

Notifications, help, language & account

There are a few icons located in the upper right corner: Notifications, Help, Language, and Account. These icons are always present and enable you to quickly review notifications, access online help, choose or change the display language, and modify web UI settings (located under Account).

Web UI other menus.jpg

Notifications
SEP sesam Server sends different types of messages – notifications. They are intended to notify users when there are important messages they should know about, such as information on the latest available issues and patches (sent via RSS feeds), information about license violations and non-configured interfaces, new release announcements, etc.
Web UI notifications.jpg

The notification status can be open or acknowledged. The notification remains open until being acknowledged throught the notification center in GUI. You can check all listed messages, but you cannot change their state in the web UI. (To change their state, use SEP sesam GUI -> menu bar -> Window -> Show Notification Center. For details, see Notification Center).

Status

Status is the default start page of the SEP sesam web UI. It provides a status overview of your jobs, data stores, events, clients, etc. You can define the time range for the status overview and set the refresh option for your status window.

Clickable links in the tables open the related item status in a new window, e.g., clicking Backups in the Job status table opens the Backups window, where you can check the details of all performed backups; for details, see the Monitoring section.

Each table features a variety of clickable details, for example, the Job status table shows the number of failed, successful and total number of backups, migrations, replications, and restores for a given time range; clicking the displayed numbers opens a new window with the related details.

By clicking the info icon (i), you can check the next events details (start, priority, etc.) or the SEP sesam Server details (license, available service packs, etc).

Status overview consists of the following reports:

  • Job status: Displays the status of all jobs (backups, restores, migrations, and replications). You can also check only active jobs.
  • Web UI job status.jpg
  • Data stores: Displays the status of your data stores and the data stores with highest utilization ratio.
  • Web UI data stores.jpg
  • Next events: Displays the details about the next events, e.g., start, event type, priority, schedule, etc.
  • Web UI next events.jpg
  • Clients: Displays a number of all, updateable, inaccessible, and disabled clients.
  • Web UI clients.jpg
  • Server: Displays the details about SEP sesam Server. By clicking the info icon shows its properties, configuration file sm_ini, process log, license details, and available updates.

Dashboard

SEP sesam web dashboard enables you to check if all your backups and restores have been completed successfully and review custom statistics on total size of backed up and restored data. You can define time range for your reports and refresh your reports. You can also generate reports by clicking the Report button.

The dashboard contains the following reports:

Application based backup state

Application-based report provides an overview of all backups sorted by applications which were backed up during a given time period. Each bar represents the results of one sesam backup day, depending on the newday event. The information includes: the number of successful application backups, the number of failed application backups (error), the number of application backups that completed with warning and the number of cancelled application backups. You can filter the results by time.

Dashboard applic bck status Beefalo.jpg

To filter the results by application, click the link View backup state by application over time (or click on table row). A report with backup graphs for each individual application is displayed. If you want to check the details only for a specific application, enter its name in the Application name field. Use the legend buttons above the graph – successful, with warning, cancelled, error, or use the Sort drop-down list to filter information that you want to be displayed in a graph. You can also remove all filters by clicking the Remove filters button.

Total backup data size over time

This report provides information on total and average data size that has been backed up during a given time period in the form of a line chart for all clients and tasks. The size chart can help administrators to analyze and predict growth trends for the SEP sesam environment. This report can also be useful for estimating the amount of data to be restored.

To filter the results by client or by tasks on the particular client, click the link View backup data size by client.

Dashboard total data size bck Beefalo V2.jpg

Clients

This graph shows the data size of backup jobs for all clients. You can filter the results by time by using the time range picker or selector, or by client. You can deselect a client from being displayed in the graph by clicking its name in the list/legend below the graph. Further breakdown by a specific client shows the backup data size for each backup day and enables the administrator to check every client's contribution to the capacity usage.

If you want to check the details only for a specific client, enter its name under Clients or use the client icon under the chart to select it. Note that each client is identified by a different color. By selecting a particular client, the tasks graph will show backup data size for each task on the selected client.
If you want to compare specific clients, click the Compare button and select the clients you want to compare. You can compare any number of clients by selecting them one by one from the Clients drop-down list. Alternatively, you can select the clients you want to compare by deselecting unwanted clients in the list/legend below the graph.

Tasks

This graph shows the backup level and size of backup jobs for the selected client. You can search the backup tasks, compare them and/or filter by backup event levels.

Regardless of your previous client selection, you can compare backup tasks of different clients by selecting Compare and then selecting the tasks from the Search tasks drop-down list one by one. When a task is selected, it is immediately shown in the graph. You can select any number of tasks to be compared by repeating the selection procedure. All selected tasks that match the specified filters (time range and optionally backup level) are shown in the Tasks graph. Alternatively, you can select the tasks you want to compare by deselecting unwanted tasks in the list/legend below the graph.

This graph shows the restore type and size of all restore jobs for the selected client. You can search the restore tasks, compare them and/or filter by restore event types (full or selective restore).

Regardless of your previous client selection, you can compare restore tasks of different clients by selecting Compare and then selecting the tasks from the Search tasks drop-down list one by one. When a task is selected, it is immediately shown in the graph. You can select any number of tasks to be compared by repeating the selection procedure. All selected tasks that match the specified filters (time range and optionally restore type) are shown in the Tasks graph. Alternatively, you can select the tasks you want to compare by deselecting unwanted tasks in the list/legend below the graph.

Monitoring

With v. 4.4.3 Beefalo V2, SEP sesam introduces improved monitoring, which is part of the SEP sesam web UI. Now you can not only check the details of all events and the last backup state, but also check an overview of all active jobs, next events and different states, e.g., data store status, backups, migrations, etc.

You can filter the results by clients, states (active, successful, with warning, etc.), backup levels (FULL, INCR, DIFF, COPY), and tasks (backups without active tasks, tasks without backups, etc.).

If you want more details on the tasks or events, click the message in the Message column to open a popup with more details.

Last backup state

This report shows the last run of each backup task that is configured on the server. The backup jobs are displayed in a table format with each row representing a specific backup task and its information: backup task name, last run status, start time of the last backup, start time of the last successful run, backup event level, start time of the last full backup, client name, interface, and SEP sesam message about the backup.

Clicking the arrow next to the backup task name displays task-related history: the status of all previous jobs for the selected task (in queue, active, successful, with warning, cancelled, error, without backups), backup level (COPY, FULL, DIFF, INCR), start and stop time, and data size. You can filter the results by tasks, by clients, by states and by backup levels. Filtering by tasks enables you to check selected backups with configured tasks or backups without configured tasks. You can also check which tasks have never been backed up by selecting tasks without backups.

Active jobs

This report shows all active jobs (backups, media events, migrations, etc.) on the server. The jobs are displayed in a table format with each row representing a specific job/event and its information: event type, object, start time of the active job, duration, task and client name, and SEP sesam message about the backup.

You can filter the results by tasks, by clients, by states, by event types and/or backup levels. You can also reset filters.

Next events

This report shows an overview of all scheduled events (backups, restores, migrations etc.) for the next couple of days, sorted by date & time in ascending order. The up-coming scheduled events are displayed in a table format with each row representing a specific event.

Clicking the arrow next to the event start time displays the event details. You can display only a specific events by enter its task name or event type in the search filed. You can also filter up-coming events by event types, or use individual filters in the column headers to filter the results by start time, task name, media pool, etc.

Data store status

The data store status provides information on configured data stores (path, Si3, HPE StoreOnce, HPE Cloud Bank, and NetApp snap stores) and their status, utilization, capacity, size of actual used (filled) space, free space, etc.

If the size of the actual used (filled) space is larger than the configured capacity on the data store (overflow of data store size), the utilization color is changed to red.

Clicking the arrow next to the data store name displays the data store details. You can use individual filters in the column headers to filter the results by data store name, type, capacity, etc.

Monitoring data store.jpg

To check utilization for each individual data store, click the link Show utilization by data store over time at the bottom right corner. A report with utilization for each individual data store is displayed.

You can use the time range picker to display a report for a predefined time period, e.g., 1 week (1W), or define your custom time range for the reports. You can filter the data stores by name or type.

The graph provides information on when the data store capacity, HWM and LWM (if relevant) values have changed, when (if) the data store ran out of space and if the purge was able to fix this problem. If the filled (blue) line is above the capacity (light blue)) line, you have to either change the EOL of some savesets in the data store and execute a purge, or you have to adjust the capacity. For details, see Data Store.

  • Use the time sliders (round icons on each side of the graph) to shorten or extend the time range of your timeline.
  • Use the legend buttons below the graph – filled, LWM, HWM, capacity to exclude the selected criteria to be displayed in a graph.

Job status reports

Under the Monitoring, you can now check the details of all jobs (All results), or specific jobs (Backups, Migrations, Replications, Restores, and Media actions). You can check a job event type, status, start time, duration, task name, etc.

You can filter the results by time by using the time range picker or selector. You can also filter the results by clients, by state, by event types and/or backup levels.

If you want more details on the job, click on the message in the Message column to open a popup with more details.

The following example shows the migrations details.

System logs

SEP sesam creates different protocols or log files for each backup day. Now you can check different system logs in the SEP sesam web UI, i.e., state log, day log, error log, interface logs (alarm, disaster, notify), and message log. It is recommended to use the SEP sesam log files to detect operations that caused errors or malfunctions, for example, in case of a failed backup.

The System logs contains the following reports:

  • State log: Shows the status for each backup in chronological order, e.g., Backup completed successfully.
  • Day log: Shows a protocol for each backup day. Day log protocols are the first and most important starting point for problem analysis.
  • Error log: Shows critical errors that occurred during the backup day. It is the subset of the entire day log, but only error messages are recorded.
  • Alarm log: Shows different alarm messages for start, backup, etc., modules, e.g., Connection refused.
  • Disaster log: Shows the recovery procedure in the event of a disaster.
  • Notify log: Shows finished events, such as backup, restore, migration, etc.
  • Message log: Shows the details of the processes on the drives, e.g., Media has been dismounted.

You can download, wrap and refresh your logs.

The following example shows the message log.
