4 4 3 Beefalo:Restore Assistant
Overview
As of v. 4.4.3. Beefalo, you can perform an online restore of not only data from regular Path backups, NDMP and NSS file system Path backups, and emails from Kopano backups, but also of virtual machines (VMs) to which you have been granted access. Only authenticated users that have been granted appropriate permissions are able to access the Restore Assistant and restore their data. These permissions are defined according to the user type. For details, see Configuring Database-Based Authentication.
You can also perform an online restore of data from encrypted backups that are protected with a password. When restoring encrypted data with a password stored in the SEP sesam database, the password is automatically used for decryption during restore. However, if a password is not stored by SEP sesam, you will be prompted to enter it online. In the latter case, if you do not know the password, you won't be able to restore an encrypted backup and it will remain locked.
Restore Assistant provides the following features:
- You can perform online restore of data from a regular Path, NDMP and NSS backups and email(s) from Kopano backups as well as virtual machines (VMware, Citrix XenServer, Hyper-V, RHV, OpenNebula, Proxmox VE).
- You can restore your data to the original or an alternative location.
- In case of VMware, you can also perform sandbox restore or instant recovery online. For details, see VMware Sandbox Restore.
Accessing Restore Assistant
You can access the Restore Assistant from the SEP sesam GUI (Activities -> Restore Assistant) or by typing the following information in the browser address bar:

Performing online restore
The online restore procedure involves selecting the desired backup savesets, emails or virtual machines, selecting restore target (the file system folder, for example), and other additional options.
Note that the procedure differs depending on whether you want to perform:
- online restore from path or mail backups
- online restore from VM backups
Restoring files, directories and emails
- Open the Restore Assistant in the browser.
- From the Start window, select the Restore Type (files and directories or Kopano mail). Click Next.
- From the Client window, select the client for the restore. You can filter clients by name, location or operating system. Click Next.
- From the Backup window - step 1, use the task selection to select a backup job. A backup task defines the source which was backed up from the client. If there are different tasks available for selection, make sure that you select the relevant one. Typically, a task called <task_name>_all ensures that (nearly) all data from the client is being backed up.
- From the Backup window - step 2, select the backup you want to restore. Use the calendar icon to specify a date range for the displayed backups. Days with non-existing backups are crossed out. Click Next.
- From the Files window, select the files, directories or emails you want to restore. Click Next.
- The procedure in the Target window differs slightly depending on whether you want to perform online restore from path or mail backups. Path backup restore
- In step 1, select the target client for restore. You can filter clients by name location or OS.
- In step 2, specify the new target path if you want to restore your data to a new restore target. Skip this step to restore the files to the original location (default).
- In step 3, set additional restore options (Execution options): Do not restore existing items: Files will be restored only if they are not already present on the target system.
- Additionally, decide how you want your data to be restored: Keep original tree structure: When restoring to original location, the option Keep original tree structure is selected by default. The directory structure of the restored files is the same as the original directory structure of the backed up data.
- In step 1, select the target client for restore. You can filter clients by name, location or OS.
- In step 2, enter a new mail user (Change user to option) and/or folder (Change folder to option) if you want to restore mail(s) to a different user mailbox or folder. Skip this step to restore the mails to the original location (default).
- In step 3, set additional restore options (Execution options): Do not restore existing folders and mails: Folders and mails will be restored only if they are not already present on the target system.
- In the last step review your restore task and click Start restore.

Create new version: Restore files under a new name.
Overwrite existing items: If the data exists on the target server, it will be replaced by the restored version.
Restore all items flat in selected target directory: The files are restored without recreating the directory structure.
Click Next.
Kopano mail restore
Overwrite existing folders and mails: If the data exists on the target server, it will be replaced by the restored version.
Click Next.
Restoring virtual machines
This procedure is slightly different for VMware sandbox restore or VMware instant recovery as described in VMware Sandbox Restore.
- Open the Restore Assistant in the browser.
- From the Start window, select the relevant Restore Type (Hyper-V, VMware, Proxmox VE, etc.). Click Next.
- From the Source window - step 1, select the server for the restore.
- From the Source window - step 2, select the VM you want to restore. Click Next.
- From the Backup window - step 1, select the task you want to restore.
- From the Backup window - step 2, select the backup you want to restore. Use the calendar icon to specify a date range for the displayed backups. Days with non-existing backups are crossed out.
- From the Backup window - step 3, select the VM saveset (configuration, disk) you want to restore. Click Next.
- From the Target window - step 1, select the target VM for restore. You can filter VMs by name. Skip this step to restore the savesets to the original location (default).
- Then under the Execution options - step 2, set additional restore options: Do not restore an existing virtual machine: VM will be restored only if it is not already present on the target system.
- From the Options window - step 1, select the data mover, if required, then under the Recovery options, select if you want to start VM after restore or not.
- In step 2, set additional target options, if required, e.g., target server, data store, network interface(s), folder, etc. Click Next.
- In the last step review your restore task and click Start restore.
Restore an existing virtual machine with a new name: VM will be restored under a new name.
Overwrite an existing virtual machine: If the VM exists on the target server, it will be replaced by the restored version.
Click Next.

You can check the status of all restore jobs by clicking the Monitoring icon (second icon in the upper right corner of the Restore Assistant). The results can be filtered by clients, by task or by message. |
