5 2 0:Immediate Start of SEP sesam Tasks

From SEPsesam

Welcome to the latest SEP sesam documentation version 5.2.0 Artemis. For previous documentation version(s), check documentation archive.

Overview

Action Immediate Start enables you to start a SEP sesam task manually as a single, non-recurring event. The task is started with priority 0, placing it first in the job queue.

The Immediate Start action is available in both the Web UI and the GUI. In the Web UI it can be accessed in two ways:

  • From the window displaying the task properties or result details for the selected task.
  • From the context menu, opened by clicking the three vertical dots button, providing a list of actions that can be executed for the selected item.

For more information on performing the immediate start of tasks in the GUI, see Immediate Start in the GUI.

Immediate Start procedure

Any SEP sesam task type can be started directly with the action Immediate Start. It is available for backup tasks and backup task groups, migration and replication tasks, restore tasks, commands and schedules.

To directly start a SEP sesam task, expand Backup Strategy in the main navigation menu and select the desired view. In the list, locate the task you want to start. Click the three vertical dots next to the task and select Immediate Start. Alternatively, you can click on the task to open its properties window and then click the Immediate Start button.

Follow the assistant and configure the required settings and options. For detailed explanations of the available options, refer to the relevant section below that describes the options for the selected task type:

You can choose to start the event setting only the most frequently used options, or you can enable additional steps to configure advanced options. Once you have completed the configuration, click Start to place the event in the job queue. In the final window, you can choose to jump directly to the corresponding monitoring view or simply close the window.

You can view and monitor the status of your jobs. In Web UI navigate to Monitoring, and then select either Active Tasks or Next Events view to display all active jobs, providing detailed information on task types, start time, duration, and more, or the job queue with all scheduled events for the current day.

Backup task and backup task group

When using the Immediate Start action for a backup task or backup task group, in the main navigation menu expand Backup Strategy and select either Backup Tasks or Backup Groups. The following options are available for both. Unless otherwise noted, the described options apply to both backup tasks and backup groups.

Options

Settings
Task (read-only, available for backup task only) The name of the backup task you want to start. Click on more... to display additional information about the selected task, for example, the SEP sesam Client name and the backup source path.
Task Type (read-only, available for backup task only) The type of this backup task.
Backup Group (read-only, available for backup group only) The name of the backup group you want to start.
Backup Level Select the backup level you want to perform. For details, see Backup Levels.
Media Pool Select the target media pool to which the data will be backed up.
Source Side Deduplication (available for media pools on Si3 deduplication store) With Si3 source-side deduplication, redundant data blocks are identified and eliminated before the data is sent across the network to the backup storage. This method reduces the amount of data that needs to be transmitted and stored, resulting in significant savings in storage space and network bandwidth. For more information, see Deduplication.
Show advanced options step Select this option if you want to configure additional backup options. The steps Advanced Options and Execution Duration and Start will be displayed.
Advanced Options
Drive Optionally, you can select the drive number of the drive that will be used for writing the backup data if you do not want to use the default drive. This option is useful when you have multiple drives configured and wish to allocate a specific drive exclusively for the backup process, optimizing performance and resource utilization.
Interface Optionally, you can select a configured TCP/IP-name of the client if you do not want to use the default client interface. This option allows you to direct the data flow over a specific network connection to enable smooth execution of backups without impeding other network activities.
Options Optionally, you can configure additional options to be performed with this event.
Follow-up migration Optionally, you can select a migration or replication task to initiate migration or replication after a backup event is completed. Note that if you also configure a follow-up event, the migration task will be executed first, followed by the configured follow-up task.
Define an additional follow-up event Optionally, you can configure a follow-up event that is triggered on the SEP sesam Server after the initial event has successfully completed. Click the toggle button to enable this option, then specify the follow-up event. You can click Examples and use one of the preconfigured events. Note that if you also select a migration task, the migration task will be executed first, followed by the configured follow-up task. For more information, see Follow-up Events.
Execution Duration and Start
Check duration of execution Optionally, you can define the maximum duration (in days, hours, and minutes) that this event is allowed to run after its scheduled start time. If the event exceeds this defined time, it will be automatically canceled. Click the toggle button to enable this option, then specify the desired maximum duration. By default, this option is disabled, and the event will not be canceled automatically. Note that the approximate end time, based on the specified duration, is calculated and displayed below the input fields.
Select a later start time Optionally, you can delay the start time by specifying a custom time at which you want this event to start, instead of starting it immediately. The event will be scheduled and added to the job queue accordingly. Click the toggle button to enable this option, then specify the desired start date and time. You can use the calendar function to select the date, and enter the time in the format hh:mm:ss. By default, this option is disabled and this event will start immediately.

Source Pool (read-only) Displays the source media pool from which the data will be migrated.
Source Drive Optionally, you can select the drive that will be used to access and retrieve the data from the source location. This option is useful when you have multiple drives configured and wish to allocate a specific drive exclusively for the migration process, optimizing performance and resource utilization.
Target Pool Optionally, you can select the destination media pool to which the data will be migrated.
Target Drive Optionally, you can select the drive that will be used to write the data to the target location. This option is useful when you have multiple drives configured and wish to allocate a specific drive exclusively for the migration process, optimizing performance and resource utilization.
Interface Optionally, you can select a configured TCP/IP-name of the client if you do not want to use the default client interface. This option allows you to direct the data flow over a specific network connection to enable smooth execution of backups without impeding other network activities.
Data Mover Optionally, you can select the data mover that will be used in the migration process. The data mover is responsible for handling the data transfer between the source and destination locations. This option is useful when access to a third-party software API is required or when you need to redirect the data stream.

Show advanced options step Select this option if you want to configure additional migration options. The steps Backup Selection, Follow-up Event, and Execution Duration and Start will be displayed.
Backup Selection
Task (read-only) The name of the backup task on which this migration task is based.
Time Period Select the time frame for the migration process. The available options are:
  • Only today: Migrate only the backups from the current day.
  • Entire time period: Migrate all available backups from the selected backup task.
  • Sesam days back from current day: Migrate backups from a relative time frame. Enter the number of days in the past, where the value "0" represents the current day. For example, specifying a time frame from -7 to -2 will migrate data from the past five days, starting seven days ago and ending two days ago (the day before yesterday). A relative time frame from -10 to 0 will migrate data from the last 10 days.

The migration period, based on the selected options, is calculated and displayed below the input fields.
