Virtualization Are you looking for an alternative for your VMware environment?

SEP supports a range of hypervisors, offering snapshot-based online backup of VMs.

Overview

SEP sesam enables you to restore individual VMs and containers that were backed up from a Proxmox server or cluster. The restore procedure in Restore Assistant is intuitive, and similar to regular file system restore.

When restoring from a full backup, a new VM is created with the same content and configuration as it had at the time of the backup. You can restore only one VM or container at a time. SEP sesam enables you to restore complete VMs into new VM instances, creating VMs without affecting the originals. For containers, you can efficiently recover container environments in case of data loss or corruption.

A restore task can be started immediately, or saved and linked with a restore event to a schedule for regular or repeated execution. For more information on scheduling, refer to Creating a Restore Event.

Prerequisites

Before you perform a Proxmox restore, make sure that the following prerequisites are met:

  • To successfully restore a Proxmox backup, all preparation steps must be performed properly. For details, see Proxmox VE Backup.
  • Depending on what you want to restore, make sure you have sufficient restore permissions and access rights. For details, see User Roles and Permissions.
  • Make sure that there is enough free space on the target system where you want to restore your data.
Note
Proxmox VMs can only be restored to the same storage type from which they were originally backed up. For example, VMs backed up from LVM storage can only be restored to LVM storage, and similarly, VMs on ZFS storage can only be restored to ZFS. Backups performed using VZDUMP can be restored to a different Proxmox node or to a different storage target.

Restoring a Proxmox VM

For more information on how to access the Restore Assistant and the general description of the web restore procedure and available options, see Standard Restore Procedure.

The functions and options available in the Restore Assistant may vary based on the selected UI mode and your user type. Some advanced restore options and functions are exclusively available in the Advanced view of the Restore Assistant. Access and functionality may also be restricted by custom roles with specific permissions. For details, see About Authentication and Authorization and User Roles and Permissions.

Steps

The following steps are performed in simple UI mode. They cover the most common restore cases and are the recommended method for performing a restore. For more experienced users, some additional restore options are available in advanced restore mode.

Note
This procedure provides specific instructions for restoring a Proxmox VE virtual machine. For general description of the restore procedure in Restore Assistant, refer to Standard Restore Procedure.
  1. Open the Restore Assistant: In the Start window, select Proxmox VE and click Next.
  2. Screenshots

  3. Select the virtual machine: In the Virtual Machine window, select your Proxmox server to restore your data to. Then select the VM you want to restore and click Next.

  5. Configure task details: In the Task window, under Task selection, select your source backup task. Under Backup selection, select the exact backup version you want to restore. To set a date range for the displayed backups, you can use the calendar function in the upper right corner. Note that Generation restore is selected by default. Click Next.

  7. Select the target environment: In the Target window, under Target selection, select your target environment for the restore. You can use the drop-down list to select the target Proxmox VE server. Note that the target VM will be created under a new name. The name will be known after the restore. Click Next.

  9. Customize restore options: In the Options window, you can modify or set additional restore options as required, such as Virtualization restore options, Recovery actions, Optional data source selection and Advanced restore options. Under Target options of the virtual machine select the required PVE Storage (Proxmox VE) from the drop-down list. If restoring from an LVM or ZFS backup, select the same storage type that was used for the backup. Additionally, ensure that the selected storage is connected to the target Proxmox node. Click Next.
  10. Note
You cannot select to start the VM automatically after the restore, the option Start virtual machine after restore is not supported for Proxmox VE.

Monitoring restore

You can monitor the restore progress using the Web UI (Monitoring -> Restores) or view the status in the GUI (Main Selection -> Job State -> Restores). The restore overview provides detailed information on the last run of restore jobs, including task name, status (successful, error, in queue...), start and stop time of the last backup, data size, throughput, etc. For details, see Monitoring in Web UI.
