Overview

As of v. 4.4.3. Grolar, you can perform an online restore of not only data from regular Path backups, but also NDMP and NSS file system Path backups and emails from Kopano backups to which you have been granted access. Only authenticated users that have been granted appropriate permissions are able to access the Self-Service Restore Assistant and restore their data. These permissions are defined according to the user type. For details, see Configuring Database-Based Authentication.

Additionally, you can now restore data online from encrypted backups that are protected with a password. When you restore data from an encrypted backup with a password stored in the SEP sesam database, you do not have to specify a password; it is used automatically for decryption during restore. But when you intend to restore data from such backup without a password being stored by SEP sesam, you will be prompted to enter the encryption password online. If you do not have a password, you won't be able to restore an encrypted backup (it will remain locked).

Self-Service Restore Assistant provides the following features:

  • You can perform online restore of data from a regular Path, NDMP and NSS backups as well as email(s) from Kopano backup.
  • You can restore your data to the original or an alternative location.

Accessing Self-Service Restore Assistant

You can access the restore assistant by typing the following information in the browser address bar:

http://[sesamserver]:11401/sep/ui/restore/

Performing online restore

The online restore procedure involves selecting the desired backup save sets or mails, selecting restore target (the file system folder, for example), and other additional options.

Steps

  1. Open the restore assistant in the browser.
  2. From the Client window, select the client for the restore (step 1). You can filter clients by name, location or operating system. By selecting a client, the backup type (mail for Kopano client) is set automatically (step 2). Click Next.

  3. From the Content window (step 1), use the task selection to select a backup job. A backup task defines the source which was backed up from the client. If there are different tasks available for selection, make sure that you select the relevant one. Typically, a task called <task_name>_all ensures that (nearly) all data from the client is being backed up.

    You can search for a file or a directory by entering a name in the Search this task/backup.

  4. From the Content window (step 2), select the backup you want to restore. Use the calendar icon to specify a date range for the displayed backups. Days with non-existing backups are crossed out.

  5. From the Content window (step 3), select the files or directories you want to restore. Click Next.

  6. The procedure in the Target window differ slightly depending on whether you want to perform online restore from path or mail backups.
  7. Path backup restore

    1. In step 1, select the target client for restore. You can filter clients by name or location.

    3. In step 2, select the target directory if you want to restore your data to a new restore target. Skip this step to restore the files to the original location (default).

    5. Set additional restore options in step 3 – Options for restore:
    6. Create new version: Option will restore files under a new name.
      Do not restore existing files: Files will be restored only if they are not already present on the target system.
      Overwrite existing files: If the data exists on the target server, it will be replaced by the restored version.

    7. Additionally, decide how you want your data to be restored:
    8. Keep original tree structure is selected by default (when restoring to original location). The directory structure of the restored files is the same as the original directory structure of the backed up data.
      Restore all files flat in selected target directory: The files are restored flat, without recreating the directory structure.
      Click Next.

    Kopano mail restore

    1. In step 1, select the target client for restore. You can filter clients by name or location.

    3. In step 2, enter new mail user (Change user to option) and/or folder (Change folder to option) if you want to restore mail(s) to a different user mailbox or folder. Skip this step to restore the mails to the original location (default).
    4. Click Next.

  8. In the last step review your restore task and click Start restore.

You can check the status of all restore jobs by clicking the Restore Monitoring icon (second icon in the upper right corner of the Restore Assistant). The results can be filtered by clients or by message.
