Grouping of SEP sesam Components

SEP sesam enables you to arrange many GUI objects hierarchically and to organize them into the groups, e.g., clients, tasks, etc. The following example shows the clients and storage devices grouped under the location(s).

Location

A Location is used for logical grouping of SEP sesam clients. Each client must be created within (and assigned to) the location, which can be defined as a group of clients and further specified as sub-locations. This is especially important when SEP sesam is used within a WAN-application. You can use locations to group your clients according to their OS, data type, different geographical location, etc. For details, see Configuring a Location.

Drive groups

Often several drives are used on one SEP sesam Server system. SEP sesam enforces you to organize drives into different groups. Grouping the drives of the same type into one group facilitates and optimizes backup operation. SEP sesam selects which drive from the group will be used for running a backup job. A backup is performed automatically on the drive that is currently free. In the event of a drive failure, each backup is automatically executed on other available drives, see Drives.

Task group

You can assign individual backup, migration and other tasks to a task group and then trigger the start of all tasks belonging to that group with a single event. The tasks are processed according to the number of available channels. The remaining tasks are placed in the execution queue and started sequentially. For details, see Adding a Task to the Task Group.

Media pools

To administer media relating to the different types of backup data, backup sources (e.g., file backup, DB backup) or drive types, media must be inserted into the media pools. SEP sesam requires the configuration of media pools, see Configuring a Media Pool.
