SLES Update with SEP sesam installed

In certain situations our customers have encountered trouble while updating the SEP sesam Server from SLES10 to SLES11 or SLES10SP2 to SLES10SP3.

During the Update SuSE delivers a new PostgreSQL version, which is not compatible with SEP sesam. This results in the Yast installer forcibly removing (de-installing) the SEP sesam Server during the update.

This documentation explains how to "keep" the SEP sesam Server on the system during the update.

How to keep the SEP sesam package installed during the Novell SLES10 or SLES11 update

Package Selection

Before actually performing the update it is possible to view certain package information. Double click "Packages":

Package Search

Change the topic to Search in order to be able to search for the SEP sesam package:

Search for sesam as illustrated in this screen shot. As you can see the package is marked with a red 'X' icon, this indicates that the Yast installer has chosen to remove the package.

Package options

In order to resolve the situation right click the package and choose the option "Protected, do not Modify" (or press *)

Confirm the setting with "OK - Try Again" and accept all further dialog inquiries, continue the update process with these settings.

The SEP sesam package and all needed dependencies will be left on the system and continue to work flawlessly.
